I very much knew to expect something different for this story, and I honestly thought that a depressed heroine and a "stupid" mavka were going to be a good match together. It's not that I wasn't willing to explore new perspectives to the Duskwalkers and their stories. Not only are those popular all around and everywhere, but they also are a reading weakness of mine, I admit it. Okay, I will admit that part of the reason that ASTK works so well is that it's clearly a Beauty and the Beast retelling story. The author may try to justify it any which way she wants, but the conclusion is this: this book was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY inferior to A Soul to Keep.
